When a 30K Hitch Runs Out of Room
Most gooseneck trailers top out around 25K to 30K GTW and ride fine on the Standard 30K hitch. But load a skid steer on a tilt-deck gooseneck, a multi-axle commercial trailer, oilfield equipment, or a hot shot load pushing the upper end of Class 5, and a 30K-rated hitch leaves you no margin. The 40K HD gives you 10,000 lbs more GTW headroom and 2,000 lbs more tongue capacity, plus a 3-inch ball coupler matched to the larger balls on 35K-class commercial gooseneck trailers. This is the hitch for operators who load heavy and tow every day.

3-inch Ball vs. 2-5/16-inch Ball
The 40K HD needs a 3-inch gooseneck ball, bigger and heavier than the standard 2-5/16-inch.
3-inch Gooseneck Ball (this line)
Required to run the 40K HD. Bigger contact surface, higher capacity, and common on commercial heavy-duty goosenecks and Class 5 equipment trailers.
2-5/16-inch Gooseneck Ball (30K lines)
Standard on Class 4 and lower-end Class 5 trailers, and used on the surge-air-gooseneck-standard-30k, offset, and shift-lock lines. It cannot run with this 40K hitch.
