Shocker Hitch — Air Ride Towing Hitches

Air Pressure Guide

Right PSI = smooth tow, no bottom-out, no bounce. Set it once per load and you're done.

Set it in 3 steps

One method works for nearly every Shocker air hitch. Use the per-model PSI chart below to pick a starting point.

1

Hook up the loaded trailer

Air pressure is set with the trailer attached so the air bag carries actual tongue weight.

2

Add air to the target range

For receiver and tongue mounts: until the bump cushion compresses ~1/8". For gooseneck/pin-box: start at the load PSI below.

3

Test and fine-tune ±5 PSI

If it bottoms out, add 5 PSI. If it feels stiff, bleed 5 PSI. Re-check next time the load changes.

PSI by hitch model

Manufacturer's recommended starting ranges. Verify yours visually with the bump-cushion rule.

Hitch modelPSI rangeHow to set
Air Receiver Hitch (HD, HD Max, Trail Force, Sport)Set by feelAdd air until the hitch frame compresses the tailgate-side bump cushion ~1/8". Add air as you add trailer weight.
Gooseneck Surge Air Hitch15 – 35 PSILight horse trailer ~15 PSI · skid steer ~20 PSI · heavy 25,000 lb load 25–35 PSI. Fine-tune ±5 PSI for feel.
Air Tongue MountSet by feelCompress the top bushing bump stop ~1/8". Same principle as the receiver hitch.
Air Equalizer (WD)40 – 60 PSIGoal: truck-side bump cushions not compressed. If the trailer-side cushions are compressed, you have too much air.
Quick Air 5th-to-Gooseneck15 – 35 PSILight trailers ~15 PSI · heavy trailers 25–35 PSI. Adjust 5 PSI at a time.
Quick Air Pin Box with Kingpin15 – 25 PSIValve is at the bottom-rear of the pin box. Heavier = more pressure, lighter = less.

If it doesn't feel right

Most issues come down to ±5 PSI. Match the symptom and adjust.

Hitch bottoms out on bumps
Too low for the load
Add 5 PSI at a time until the hitch frame just compresses the bump cushion ~1/8".
Ride feels stiff / rigid
Too high for the load
Bleed 5 PSI at a time. You want slight visible compression — not zero.
Trailer bounces or oscillates
Pressure too low, or tongue weight off
Add 5 PSI. Confirm tongue weight is 10–15% of GTW and cargo is balanced.
Pressure drops overnight
Slow leak at valve stem or air bag
Spray soapy water on valve and seams. Bubbles = leak. Tighten valve core or contact support.
Pressure shifts between trips
Temperature change (normal)
Top up to target PSI before each tow. Cold mornings drop pressure ~1 PSI per 10°F.

Still off after 5 PSI tweaks both ways? Contact support with your hitch model and trailer weight.
